Head’s welcome
Has Spring sprung? Purple crocuses and snowdrops suddenly carpet the site, the fields are not all mud, and, for the first time in weeks, the sun has come out, shining on our canoeists on the Spinney Pond. Children soak up the rays at leisure at lunchtime, and everyone looks happier. What a difference some sunshine makes! I hope the U6th have felt that as they have ploughed their way through their A-level mocks diligently this week. There is not long to go now, and I have been impressed at how conscientiously they have gone about their business.
It’s been a very positive first week back, and I have been enjoying some of the stories that have come from our half-term trips to Berlin (Model United Nations), Barcelona (F&N and Spanish) and Florence (Art History). I have loved two events this week, especially: the unveiling of 2nd Former Rebecca’s powerful symbol of school unity and inclusion on the wall in the Dining Hall, and the celebratory White Hall lunch to launch our L6th Kim Coaches into their coaching careers. They have been trained in coaching techniques, and the aim is that they will provide informal, friendly, but targeted support to junior pupils identified by their Housemasters/mistresses or Tutors. It’s a terrific initiative that helps to develop critical human skills like empathy in our older pupils, while younger ones – struggling for whatever reason – get help from someone who has been in their shoes very recently. And I am, of course, very excited at the prospect of our first Open House morning for Prep pupils, followed swiftly by the Sixth Form masked black tie dinner on Friday!
A quick plug for some events coming up:
- Castle Open Day on Sunday from 1pm offers a rare chance for a fully guided historical tour of the Castle, plus cream tea. It is a must for every Kimbolton parent at some point in their time here.
- Thursday is World Book Day, and at 2pm every pupil and adult in the school will Drop Everything And Read for 20 minutes. Please make sure your child brings their book.
- I hope 4th-6th Form parents will join us for the Higher Education and Careers Fair on Thursday in the Castle from 6pm. We have 37 professions, 8 companies and 16 universities represented – it should be a brilliant event.
- Kimbolton Presents, on Friday at 7.30pm in the Lewis Hall, is our annual talent show to raise funds for charities of the Charity Committee’s choice. Please come along.
Two KSPA events are approaching at maximum speed, too:
- Please join us for the annual Quiz Night on March 13th in the Hunter Hall (curry included) – there are still some tables and spaces left. It is an excellent night and the quiz is gratifyingly quirky and hard.
- History Alive! (May 3rd-4th) promises to be a historical extravaganza, years in the making. There will be more than 250 re-enactors, plus horses and vehicles, from several different historical periods, with the centrepiece a Tudor-era joust on the Mall. This will be Horrible Histories in the flesh! It will be a thrilling event – please book in now.
I wish you all an excellent weekend.
