House history

Dawson’s House proudly takes its name from William Dawson, one of the original founders of Kimbolton School in 1600. A respected baker by trade, Dawson donated funds to provide education for the poorer children of the parish, helping to establish the school’s enduring tradition of learning and service.

In recognition of his trade, the bakers’ paddles featured on the Dawson’s House crest pay tribute to his profession. The original school, supported by Dawson and his fellow founders, was first housed in St Andrew’s Church, marking the humble beginnings of what would grow into the thriving community that Kimbolton School is today.

House system

The house system at Kimbolton was introduced in 1940 by then Headmaster, William Ingram, for pastoral care and competition purposes.

The Senior House names reflect both the school’s founders (Balye and Dawson) and key figures in its leadership (Ingram, Gibbard, Owen).

In Prep, different Houses reflect the history of Kimbolton Castle ownership (Fitzpiers, Montagu, Stafford, Wingfield). This connects pupils to both the heritage of the Castle and the history of the school.
