GCSE Physics
GCSE Physics at Kimbolton
GCSE Physics at Kimbolton School explores the fundamental principles that govern the universe, from the smallest particles to the largest galaxies.
Physics equips students with the knowledge and skills to understand the world around them, laying a foundation for a wide range of scientific careers.
Physics is essential because..
Physics helps us understand the principles behind the natural world and technological advancements. From space exploration to sustainable energy, physics drives innovation and underpins modern engineering, healthcare, and technology. It develops analytical, mathematical, and critical thinking skills that are invaluable across a range of careers.
Assessment
During Physics lessons, you will explore the fundamental principles that govern the universe across six key areas: energy and energy transfers, forces and motion, electricity and magnetism, waves and the electromagnetic spectrum, particle model of matter, and space physics (for Separate Sciences). These topics delve into the mechanics behind everyday phenomena, the technology powering our world, and the physics of the cosmos, such as the life cycle of stars.
Physics also helps you develop critical skills like mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, logical thinking, data analysis, and investigative techniques. These skills are essential for a wide range of studies and careers, including engineering, technology, and space exploration.
The iGCSE Physics course is assessed entirely through written exams:
- Combined Science: Two of the six written exams, each 1 hour 15 minutes.
- Separate Sciences: Two written exams for Physics, each 1 hour 45 minutes.
Practical work is assessed within the written exams and focuses on experimental techniques and applications.
Beyond the classroom
- STEM activities: Participate in projects and competitions that integrate physics, engineering, and technology.
- Science Club: Explore real-world applications of physics through experiments and challenges.
- Educational trips: Visit research centres, observatories, or industrial facilities to see physics in action
“Physics is about unlocking the mysteries of the universe, from understanding the smallest particles to exploring the vastness of space.”
You will enjoy Physics if you…
- Are curious about the laws of the universe
- Enjoy practical experiments and problem-solving
- Want to explore cutting-edge fields like renewable energy and quantum mechanics
- Aim for a career in engineering, technology, or space exploration.
“The world’s fastest roller coaster, Formula Rossa in Abu Dhabi, accelerates from 0 to 240 km/h in just 4.9 seconds, a thrilling example of physics in action.”
