GCSE Music at Kimbolton

GCSE Music at Kimbolton School is a creative and enriching course that combines performance, composition, and analysis.

You’ll explore a wide range of musical genres, from classical to popular music, and develop the skills to express yourself musically while gaining a deeper understanding of the subject.

About the course

The Eduqas GCSE Music course is divided into three interrelated components:

  1. Musical forms and devices: explore the origins of Western classical music and its influence on modern compositions.
  2. Music for ensembles: study the textures and sonorities of jazz, blues, musical theatre, and traditional chamber music.
  3. Film and popular music: learn how music enhances storytelling and creates atmosphere in films, as well as explore diverse genres of popular music.

You’ll develop practical skills through composing and performing music, alongside analytical skills through the study of musical works.

Assessment

The GCSE Music course is assessed through three components:

  • Written exam (40%): Analyse set works and demonstrate your theoretical knowledge by applying it to unfamiliar music.
  • Composition (30%): Create two original pieces—one to a set brief and one free choice—showcasing your creativity and understanding of musical forms and structures.
  • Performance (30%): Perform one solo piece and one ensemble piece, highlighting your technical ability and interpretive skills.

These components provide a balanced assessment of your analytical, creative, and performance abilities in music.

Beyond the classroom
