Environment Initiative
Kimbolton Environment Initiative (KEI) is an enrichment option focused on environmental science and sustainability.
Choose Kimbolton Environment Initiative (KEI) and get involved in a unique blend of ‘hands-on’ activities, including:
Gardening
Pupils have been designing an outdoor classroom space that can be used by all subjects, creating an inspiring area for learning beyond the traditional classroom. Within this space, they are also exploring the different growing needs of plants and developing practical gardening skills.
Food production
To understand more about where our food comes from, the group has visited several local farms. These visits have helped pupils learn about modern agricultural techniques, land‑management choices and the environmental impact of food production.
Educational trips to local farms and natural sites
Our recent visits have taken pupils across a diverse range of local farms and natural environments, giving them the chance to see sustainability in action. At Mr Farrington’s award‑winning LEAF‑supported farm, they explored environmentally friendly farming techniques, while a visit to Mr Mumford’s farm introduced them to cutting‑edge agricultural technology, including AI and robotic machinery, alongside a walk through semi‑ancient woodland and discussions about farming near a reservoir.
Pupils also enjoyed a guided nature walk at Paxton Pits Nature Reserve with long‑standing volunteer David MacArthur, learning about conservation projects such as the creation of bird hides. Trips to Brown’s British Flowers offered insight into both the working farm and the beauty of seasonal British blooms, highlighting how flowers can be grown and brought to market with minimal environmental impact, with plans to return to observe seasonal changes.
Measuring Biodiversity across our school site
Pupils have been carrying out weekly bird surveys to monitor the species found on our school grounds and have created an educational display showing how biodiversity changes throughout the seasons. They are also leading an exciting project to design and dig a new wildlife pond to further support local habitats.
Sustainability
The group has been learning from our support staff about the environmental challenges faced on our school site and exploring ways to address them. They are also working towards the TED‑Ed Earth School Awards, engaging with resources that introduce global environmental issues, potential solutions and inspiring initiatives already making a difference.
Currently open to pupils in the Third – Sixth Form.
Skills development
KEI participants delve into critical issues such as climate change, biodiversity, and conservation, while developing practical skills and fostering teamwork.
Joining KEI also provides opportunities to earn the National Outdoor Learning Award (NOLA), recognising personal development in outdoor learning contexts.
We also engage in the Earth-School Awards an annual, global $100,000 environmental sustainability competition for students between the ages of 13 and 19.
Through KEI experiences, students cultivate eco-leadership and a deeper connection to the natural world, empowering them to become active stewards of their environment.
