What is a career?

A career is a life-long journey of learning, skills acquisition, knowledge, experiences and opportunities. At Kimbolton School, we are very proud to be an integral part of your child’s career journey, supporting and encouraging them as they grow and develop throughout the Senior School and beyond.

Senior School Careers Education Programme

At Kimbolton School, we are proud to offer a comprehensive Careers Education Programme that supports our pupils from the 1st Form through to the Upper Sixth. This programme is designed to guide pupils on a journey of exploration, helping them navigate and evaluate their post-18 options.

Through a rich blend of curriculum-based learning and enrichment opportunities, we help pupils explore their strengths, discover a wide range of career pathways, and develop the skills they need to make well-informed choices, wherever their journey may lead.

You can view the full Careers Education Programme for 2025-2026

Future Friday Breakfasts – For Parents and Pupils

As part of our Careers Education Programme, we are delighted to introduce Future Friday Breakfasts—a regular event open to pupils and their parents. These sessions will feature guest speakers from a wide range of industries that reflect the interests and aspirations expressed by our pupils.

We warmly encourage you to join us for these informative and engaging mornings. Research consistently shows that parents play a pivotal role in shaping their child’s career choices. We hope these events will not only broaden pupils’ awareness of potential career pathways but also equip parents to support meaningful career-related discussions at home.

Lunchtime Insight Workshops

These have been developed in direct response to topics pupils in the Senior School are eager to explore. Open to all year groups, these sessions aim to provide valuable information, enabling pupils to build essential life and employability skills.

Careers Webinars

These careers-focused webinars are designed to help both pupils and parents gain a clearer understanding of the wide range of options available after the age of 18. The earlier pupils are informed about these pathways, the better equipped they are to make informed decisions about their GCSE and A level subject choices. Early awareness also enables pupils to seek out relevant work experience and engage in super-curricular and extra-curricular activities that will help them stand out when the time comes to leave school.

Each webinar will feature guest speakers who will share their own experiences and insights, offering a real-world perspective on different post-18 pathways. These sessions will also highlight the flexibility within modern career journeys, including how pupils may pursue more than one route simultaneously—and how to manage such choices effectively.

Xello – New careers platform launching in September

In September 2025, we will begin using Xello, a pupil-centred careers platform that empowers you to take ownership of your future. Through interactive assessments and reflective activities, you will build self-awareness, explore post-18 options, and create a personalised career plan.

Xello’s engaging tools match your interests and strengths with real-world pathways, including university courses, apprenticeships, and job profiles. It complements our curriculum by helping you connect school learning to life beyond Kimbolton.

You can see the topics covered by each year group

Many of these activities can also be added to your CV and demonstrate your employability skills.

To help you make the most of your time, we’ve created a Summer Learning Bingo packed with ideas—from budgeting challenges and creative projects to virtual work experience and career exploration.

Take time this summer to recharge—but also to reflect, explore, and get curious. Future You will thank you!

Spotlight on Engineering and Design & Technology

Spotlight on Engineering and Design Technology

The difference between Engineering and Design Technology lies in their focus, methods, and end goals, though they often overlap and complement each other

Engineering

Focus: Solving problems using scientific and mathematical principles.

Key characteristics:

  • Emphasizes functionality, efficiency, and safety.
  • Involves analysis, calculation, and testing.
  • Often deals with real-world constraints like materials, cost, and regulations.
  • Examples: Civil engineering (bridges), mechanical engineering (engines), electrical engineering (circuits).

Typical activities:

  • Designing systems or structures based on technical requirements.
  • Running simulations and stress tests.
  • Ensuring compliance with standards and codes.

Design Technology

Focus: Creating products that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing, often with a user-centered approach.

Key characteristics:

  • Emphasizes creativity, innovation, and usability.
  • Involves prototyping, model-making, and user testing.
  • Often taught in schools as a hands-on subject combining art, technology, and practical skills.
  • Examples: Product design, furniture design, packaging, user interface design.

Typical activities:

  • Sketching and modeling ideas.
  • Using CAD software to visualize designs.
  • Considering ergonomics, sustainability, and user experience.

How Engineering and Design & Technology work together

In real-world projects, engineers and design technologists often collaborate:

  • A design technologist might create a sleek, user-friendly concept for a new gadget.
  • An engineer ensures that the gadget works reliably, is manufacturable, and meets safety standards.

Studying Engineering or Design Technology in school equips pupils with adaptable, in-demand skills—critical thinking, digital literacy, creativity, teamwork, and sustainability awareness. With engineering jobs expected to grow across all UK regions by 2030, studying these subjects opens doors to rewarding careers in rapidly developing areas such as:

  • Net-zero and renewable energy
  • Infrastructure and construction
  • Advanced manufacturing and robotics
  • Automotive and aerospace development

Current trend in Engineering in the UK (ref Engineering UK Dec 2024)

Could AI replace Engineers and Design Technologists?

AI is reshaping—not replacing—these professions. By combining technical expertise, creativity, and digital skills, you can help build the smart, sustainable, and human-centred future of engineering and design.

1. Automating repetitive tasks

AI tools can now perform many repetitive or time-consuming tasks.

Impact: Engineers can focus more on creative problem-solving and innovation rather than routine work.

2. Data-driven decision Making

Modern engineering relies heavily on data analysis.

Impact: Engineers are expected to be comfortable using AI tools and interpreting large data sets.

3. Changing the skill set

According to the UK’s Engineering Council and World Economic Forum

  • Digital skills, AI literacy, and interdisciplinary thinking are now essential
  • Engineering students are increasingly learning Python, MATLAB, or machine learning basics
  • Soft skills like creativity, adaptability, and ethical reasoning are more important than ever

Impact: Future engineers must blend technical knowledge with digital fluency and human-centred thinking.

4. Creating new engineering fields

AI is also enabling entirely new roles and industries, such as:

  • AI and robotics engineering
  • Smart infrastructure and city design
  • Autonomous vehicle development
  • AI in biomedical engineering (e.g. robotic surgery, prosthetics design)

Impact: Students studying design technology, physics, computing, and maths are well-positioned to enter these fast-evolving sectors.

What can budding Engineers and Design Technologists do now?

  • Get familiar with digital tools like CAD, coding (e.g. Python), and data handling
  • Explore online AI basics courses (many are free!)
  • Engage in projects that combine creativity with tech—like robotics, STEM clubs, or coding challenges
  • Use careers platforms (like Xello in September) to explore future-focused roles

Virtual work and career experiences

A parent recently asked; “What actually is virtual work experience?”

In case you have the same question here is a brief explanation.

Virtual work experience lets pupils explore different careers online. They take part in interactive activities, hear from professionals, and complete tasks to build skills and confidence. It’s a safe and flexible way for pupils to learn about the world of work from home. These experiences are designed in collaboration with leading employers and include video content, interactive activities, and the chance to receive a certificate upon completion.  They vary in length from 30 minutes to 10h on average. Sometimes they are live, but mostly On Demand.

These are a brilliant use of time for any pupils over the summer holidays!  We recommend Springpod for a great range of opportunities with a wide range of companies.  Older students may also be interested in The Forage, which is online work experience with large corporate companies and includes tasks and feedback within the experience.
