Welcome to Balyes House

House history
Balyes House is named in honour of Henry Balye, one of the two principal founders and trustees responsible for establishing Kimbolton School in 1600, alongside William Dawson. Their vision laid the foundation for what would become one of the region’s most enduring centres of education.
The House itself was created in 1940 by Headmaster William Ingram, as part of an early system of Houses designed to foster pastoral care, community spirit, and healthy competition among pupils.
In adopting Henry Balye’s name, Balyes House pays tribute to his lasting contribution to the school’s history and its guiding values of learning and service.
Did you know? The House motto, “All is well in our House,” reflects a spirit of unity and wellbeing, embodying the warmth, support, and camaraderie that continue to define Balyes House today.

House system
The house system at Kimbolton was introduced in 1940 by then Headmaster, William Ingram, for pastoral care and competition purposes.
The Senior House names reflect both the school’s founders (Balye and Dawson) and key figures in its leadership (Ingram, Gibbard, Owen).
In Prep, different Houses reflect the history of Kimbolton Castle ownership (Fitzpiers, Montagu, Stafford, Wingfield). This connects pupils to both the heritage of the Castle and the history of the school.
Every House enables pupils to:
- Feel part of a wider community
- Be known as an individual
- Benefit from supportive tutors
- Access a breadth of opportunities
- Gain leadership experience
