Course code: OCR Religious Studies (H573)

Preferred PRE entry requirements: Grade 6 or higher in GCSE Religious Studies is preferable. If Religious Studies was not studied, a similar grade in English Literature is required. An inquisitive mindset and an enthusiasm for discussion are essential.

A Level Philosophy, Religion & Ethics is a comprehensive exploration of the big questions that have shaped human thought. You will study philosophical ideas from ancient Greece to modern-day thinkers, delve into ethical theories and their application to contemporary issues, and analyse religious beliefs, practices, and their relevance in the modern world. This course develops your ability to evaluate arguments, construct reasoned responses, and engage in meaningful dialogue on moral and spiritual matters.

Assessment

During A Level Philosophy, Religion & Ethics, you will study a range of topics that sharpen your analytical and evaluative skills.

Assessment includes:

Developments in religious thought: analyses the evolution of religious beliefs and their role in addressing contemporary challenges such as gender, secularism, and multiculturalism.
The course is assessed through written exams, requiring critical analysis and structured argumentation.

Philosophy of religion: explores ancient and modern philosophical ideas, arguments for and against the existence of God, and the nature of religious experience.

Ethics: examines ethical theories such as utilitarianism, situation ethics, and virtue ethics, alongside their application to issues like euthanasia and business ethics.
