Preferred English Literature entry requirements: Grade 6 in GCSE English Language and English Literature is preferable. A passion for reading and a willingness to engage in discussion are essential.

English Literature A-Level is an enjoyable and rewarding course that offers in-depth study of a diverse range of authors and texts across different genres and periods. The course explores how literary works simultaneously capture the imagination and challenge you to think afresh about the world and about yourself. More than any other subject, English Literature A-Level values your own opinions and responses and it teaches you to develop and test your ideas through discussion and to express yourself clearly and persuasively both orally and in writing.

By taking this course you will acquire skills in critical analysis, lateral thinking and advanced communication that are highly valued by universities and employers. An A-Level in English Literature is therefore an excellent preparation for a wide range of degree programmes and careers.

Assessment

During A Level English Literature, you will delve into engaging and thought-provoking texts across genres and time periods.

Assessment includes:

Component 1: Drama and Poetry Pre-1900 – includes analysis of plays by Shakespeare and other key works from the period.

Component 2: Component 2: Comparative and Contextual Study with a focus on American Literature.

Component 3: Coursework – an independent study comparing two literary texts of your choice.

The course develops skills in close reading, comparative analysis, and forming critical arguments.

Beyond the classroom

  • Sixth Form Book Club: A student lead book club that runs every half term, with a focus on books outside of the syllabus. This is open to all A Level Students. 
  • Trips to theatres, literary festivals, and historic sites related to studied texts.
  • Access to National Theatre live streams and local productions.
  • Guest lectures from university academics and published authors.
  • Opportunities to participate in writing workshops and creative challenges.
  • Contributions to the school magazine or other literary publications.
