Prep Music
Co-curricular music
Music encourages a positive self-image and self-expression. It is linked with cognitive ability and memory; and develops self-discipline, teamwork, fine motor skills, co-ordination, creativity and problem-solving.
We encourage pupils to make music, whatever their interests and aspirations. With 26 dedicated musicians on our team, we offer coaching in almost every instrument and style.
“Over 65% of our Upper Prep pupils and a quarter of our Senior School pupils receive weekly lessons and many learn a second or even a third instrument.”

Stringlets and Mini-Strings (Years 1 and 2)
Pupils in Years 1 and Year 2 enjoy “Stringlets” and “Mini-Strings” as an extra-curricular activity. In these group lessons, pupils learn the basics of string playing, either on violin or cello (loaned by school). A small fee applies.
School choirs
We have three main choirs: Years 1 and 2 Choir, Junior Choir (Years 3-4) and Senior Choir (Years 5-6). Well over half of our pupils take part. We also have a smaller invitation-only Chamber Choir (Years 5-6). Our choirs take part in concerts, including the Christmas Concert, Carol Service and our Summer Production.
Ensembles
We are committed to offering at least one ensemble opportunity to every instrumentalist, at whatever age or stage. From Rock Band, Recorder Club, Guitar Group and Junior/Senior Orchestra to Clarinet, String, Flute, Brass or Saxophone Ensembles – there’s something for everyone.
Performance opportunities
House singing competitions, Concerts, our annual Year 6 Production and Orchestral Afternoons, there are plenty of opportunities to become confident performers.
Individual tuition – Year 3 up
Many pupils take advantage of the expert tuition with our visiting specialists. We offer teaching on all orchestral and band instruments as well as piano, guitar, drums, percussion and voice (for Years 5 and 6 only, unless as a second instrument).
In addition, we offer extra aural classes for those approaching examinations and music theory classes for those at Grade 3 and above.
Additional fees apply.
Music exhibitions
We award Music Exhibitions to our most talented musicians.
These provide four terms of instrumental/vocal tuition funded by the School and are awarded to all those who pass exams at Grade 5 or above with a merit or distinction (having been entered for the examination by the School).
