Academic scholarships
Our approach
A love of scholarship is important to all pupils at Kimbolton, but our Scholars are expected to relish intellectual engagement beyond the curriculum as part of their DNA.
Our Scholars will be ambassadors for learning, living out our values of endeavour, curiosity and courage so as to inspire their peers.
Academic Scholars will seek out opportunities to read, to watch, to listen beyond their curricula, to participate in internal and external academic challenges and competitions and to contribute to pupil voice initiatives.
At the top of the school, our academic Scholars will lead societies and activities and aspire to success at Oxbridge application, or other top universities and Post-18 pathways.
Staff lead: Mrs Latham

Scholar opportunities
Scholars will have the opportunity to engage in and take a leading role in our academic clubs and societies.
For example, Junior Scholars (1st – 3rd Form), Academic Discussion Meetings (4th – 5th Form), Manchester Group (5th – U6th), HPQ (4th Form) and EPQ (L6th) and Academic mentoring (L6th -U6th).
Academic portfolio of evidence
For their submission, applicants at all levels of entry are required to submit a portfolio of evidence with two parts. Across the portfolio of evidence, pupils must be able to evidence outstanding academic performance across the majority of their subjects.
Firstly, applicants should provide a short guide (no more than 1000 words) which outlines why one of the ‘wicked problems’ below is so difficult to solve. They should provide some suggestions or approaches that might be effective in addressing the chosen problem.
- Poverty
- Climate Change
- Education
- Homelessness
- Sustainability
Applicants can present their work in their preferred form: e.g., essay, presentation, film. Linguists are welcome to write in their preferred language (500 words).
Secondly, applicants are also asked to include evidence of academic engagement completed in or out of school. This could include:
- Homework projects that applicants are proud of
- Courses they have completed
- Academic competitions they have entered
- Books they have read
- Lectures or museums they have attended.
Results from Entrance Examinations, End of year Examinations or GCSEs (which we will expect to be outstanding) will be considered alongside the portfolio of evidence.
Assessment and interviews
Successful applicants will be invited to an interview to discuss their portfolio of evidence, allowing them to expand on their work and discuss their choices.
The interview will also give an opportunity to discuss academic knowledge and future ambitions.
