Preferred English Language entry requirements: Grade 6 in GCSE English Language and English Literature is preferable. A willingness to engage in discussions and explore new interpretations is essential.

A Level English Language is an in-depth study of how language is structured, used, and interpreted. You will examine linguistic theories, explore language in different social and historical contexts, and develop your ability to analyse texts critically.

The course also includes a creative component, allowing students to produce original writing based on a variety of prompts and genres. Whether you’re interested in language as a tool for storytelling, persuasion, or social influence, this course offers something for everyone.

Assessment

During A Level English Language, you will explore topics ranging from the mechanics of language to its use in society.

Assessment includes:

  • Paper 1: Language, the individual, and society – covers language diversity, child language acquisition, and textual analysis.
  • Paper 2: Language diversity and change – focuses on how language evolves and adapts to social and cultural shifts.
  • Non-Exam Assessment (NEA): a personal investigation of a language topic of your choice and a creative writing task.

The course combines analytical and creative elements, fostering a comprehensive understanding of language.
