A Level English Language at Kimbolton

About the course

Course code: Pearson Edexcel English Language (9EN0)

Preferred English Language entry requirements: Grade 6 in GCSE English Language and English Literature is preferable. A willingness to engage in discussions and explore new interpretations is essential.

English Language is a stimulating and rewarding course which provides students with multiple perspectives on a fundamental aspect of their existence, their language. The course explores, amongst other things: how the language is structured; how it is used to signal identity, impose solidarity and difference; how it is acquired by children and how it has changed over time.

Have you ever wondered why children say things like ‘I writed that’ even when their parents don’t? Or why knight contains so many unpronounced letters? English Language A-Level will help you solve these mysteries (and others) as well as offering you an array of skills essential for the modern world. English Language A-Level requires technical and critical analysis, as well as cultural and social sensitivity. The integration of all these skills will prepare you for a range of potential degree subjects and/or professions.

Assessment

During A Level English Language, you will explore topics ranging from the mechanics of language to its use in society.

Assessment includes:

  • Paper 1: Language, the individual, and society – covers language diversity, child language acquisition, and textual analysis.
  • Paper 2: Language diversity and change – focuses on how language evolves and adapts to social and cultural shifts.
  • Non-Exam Assessment (NEA): a personal investigation of a language topic of your choice and a creative writing task.

The course combines analytical and creative elements, fostering a comprehensive understanding of language.
