In Sixth Form, you’ll find a wide range of subject choices taught in classes of around 8 to 12 students
We offer a bridge between school and university, where you will develop new independent learning skills.
Academic life in Sixth Form can certainly be hard work. But, with our support, and a dash of inspiration, academic ambition and variety – you’ll take your thinking to new heights.
Academic stretch
In addition to A Levels, academic enrichment opportunities will prepare you for life beyond Sixth Form.
Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
Studying an EPQ is a fantastic opportunity to independently explore a topic of your choosing, whilst gaining a high-value qualification to add to your A Level examinations. Perfect preparation for higher education!
Super curriculum
In the Lower Sixth, our timetabled Super Curriculum sessions will develop your research, critical thinking and presentation skills, all vital for success in further education and the workplace. We also explore fundamental questions about knowledge and its sources to enhance your ability to think independently.
Citizenship programme
Led by external expert speakers, this programme enables you to explore diverse themes, from thought-provoking topics to vital life skills and knowledge.
Academic enrichment
Thursday afternoons are dedicated to co-curricular opportunities. Here, you’ll find societies exploring fascinating topics such as astrophysics, history, literature, politics and philosophy. There’s also MedSoc for aspiring medics, and The Manchester Group for those keen to widen their intellectual curiosity.
Academic extension
Add breadth and depth to your academic and personal profile, with an extension course related to your university or career ambitions. Course themes include everything from architecture and astronomy, through to Model United Nations, cookery and performing arts skills.
Our approach
Academic support
You will have a Personal Tutor to guide you academically and ensure your well-being. Sixth Form encourages independence, preparing you for life beyond school, but teachers and Tutor are always here to support you.
Additional help is available through our Academic Support department, providing one-to-one or group support in various areas such as literacy, organisation, study skills, and exam preparation.
Digital learning
Digital learning is central to Sixth Form life, complementing traditional teaching methods. With campus-wide Wi-Fi, iMacs in select classrooms, online courses, resources, and iPads for all students, our curriculum integrates digital tools seamlessly. A Level courses are online, promoting individual study and organisation.
Academic news
-
“I’m interested in becoming a doctor, so the Science Showcase was an ideal opportunity to research a topic related to that career. I think it will be a good addition to my CV and also give me something extra to talk about in interviews.”
Olivia, Sixth Form student
