GCSE Biology
GCSE Biology at Kimbolton
Biology is the study of the natural world: living organisms and their structure,
life-cycles, adaptations, and environment. This knowledge can ultimately be
used to improve our world in many areas including public health, disease
control, natural resources, pollution, animal care and conservation.
We are fortunate to have our purpose-built STEM teaching and learning facility – the Queen Katherine Building, where pupils will study for their GCSE Biology – that includes all the latest equipment.
Biology is essential because…
We need a society of scientifically-literate people who understand why
biodiversity and conservation are so important to the future health of the planet. Biology also gives you the maths skills to manipulate and analyse data, helps to combat fake news and misunderstanding, and plays a pivotal role in the UK economy. Learning how our own bodies work allows us to make good and ethical decisions in our adult lives.
Assessment
During Biology lessons, you will delve into seven key subject areas: cell biology, organisation, infection and response, energetics, homeostasis, inheritance and evolution, and ecology. These topics explore how biological understanding drives innovations such as treatments for infertility and heart disease, the importance of biodiversity in maintaining ecosystems, and strategies for managing the spread of pathogens to reduce the impact of future pandemics.
Biology also develops essential skills, including research, analysis, communication, problem-solving, presentation, creativity, and organisation, preparing you for a wide range of future studies and careers.
- Separate Sciences: Studied as part of AQA GCSE Biology 8461, assessed via two exams (Specification at a glance).
- Combined Science: Included in AQA Combined Science Trilogy 8464, assessed via six exams—two each for Biology, Chemistry, and Physics (Specification at a glance).
Beyond the classroom
- After-school clubs including: STEM Club for independent science projects and Gardening Club focusing on conservation and plant sciences.
- Medical Society: For Fifth and Sixth Form students to discuss ethical issues and hear from guest speakers, including alumni in medical careers.
- Competitions: Biology Challenge, organised by the Royal Society of Biology, open to Fourth Form pupils
“Biology has been interesting, immersive and fun with a range of new topics and practicals looking at everything from a tiny piece of DNA to the whole planet!“
