A Level Economics at Kimbolton
A Level Economics at Kimbolton School sheds light on the incentives driving individual, business, and government behaviour.
This dynamic course equips students with the skills to analyse, debate, and understand the economic forces that shape our world.
Why Economics is important…
Economics is at the heart of societal decisions, guiding how limited resources are allocated. Understanding economics allows us to evaluate policies and decisions critically, from local business strategies to global financial systems. This subject develops problem-solving, analytical, and evaluative skills essential for navigating today’s complex world.
About the course
Course code: AQA Economics 7136
Preferred Economics entry requirements
At least a grade 6 in GCSE Maths. Logical thinker, happy to interpret graphical
analysis. Interested in current affairs and the commercial and financial environment
Our AQA Economics course explores real-world economic principles and challenges. Key topics include:
- Microeconomics: Learn how prices are set, such as oil and housing, and why people don’t always behave rationally.
- Macroeconomics: Study national and global economic shocks and their effects.
- Global economics: Examine why some nations prosper while others face challenges.
- Policy impacts: Analyse how government decisions, such as tax changes, affect unemployment, inflation, and growth.
Real-world examples like climate change, obesity, and global debt provide the foundation for applying economic theories to current events.
Assessment
During A Level Economics, you will explore how individuals, firms, and governments make decisions that shape the economy. Topics include microeconomics, macroeconomics, and global economic trends.
Assessment is through three written exams:
- Paper 1: Markets and market failure, focusing on microeconomics.
- Paper 2: National and international economy, covering macroeconomics.
- Paper 3: Synoptic paper assessing all areas through real-world case studies and data response questions.
Beyond the classroom
- Competitions: Participate in events like the trading and BASE competitions.
- Talks and workshops: Attend after-school sessions with economic professionals.
- Practical projects: Apply your knowledge to real-world scenarios and challenges.
“Economics has enabled me to see world events in a new light and to understand their repercussions on daily life.”
