A Level Computer Science at Kimbolton

About the course

Course code: OCR Computer Science (H446)

Preferred Computer Science entry requirements: Grade 6 or higher in GCSE Computer Science is preferable, and prior experience in Computer Science is recommended. A passion for technology and logical thinking is essential. Entry can be considered on a case-by-case basis.

A Level Computer Science delves into the fundamentals of computational thinking and the design and development of software systems. You will learn to code in languages like Python, Assembly, SQL, HTML and JavaScript, study algorithms and data structures, and understand systems architecture.

The course also addresses topics such as cybersecurity, networking, and the ethical implications of technology. Students will complete a programming project, applying their skills to solve real-world problems.

Assessment

During A Level Computer Science, you will gain hands-on experience with programming and theoretical knowledge of computational systems.

Assessment includes:

Programming Project: a practical coursework project where students design, code, and evaluate a system to address a real-world problem.
The course balances theoretical study with practical application, ensuring students are well-prepared for higher education and industry roles.

Component 1: Computer Systems – a written exam covering topics such as hardware, software, networks, and systems security.

Component 2: Algorithms and Programming – a written exam focusing on computational thinking, algorithms, and problem-solving.

The programming project is worth 20% of the final grade and the 2 written papers are worth 40% each.
