A Level Chemistry at Kimbolton

Why Chemistry is important…

Chemistry is at the forefront of innovation, underpinning developments in medicine, sustainable energy, and materials science. It fosters logical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity, equipping students with transferable skills that are highly valued across industries.

About the course

Course code: OCR Chemistry A (H432)

Preferred Chemistry entry requirements
Grade 7 or above in GCSE Chemistry or Dual Science. Preferably, a similar grade in GCSE Mathematics. Ability to write concisely and precisely.

OCR Chemistry A (H432) provides an in-depth exploration of core chemical concepts and their real-world applications. Topics include:

  • Atomic structure and bonding: Understand how atoms combine to form the substances around us.
  • Chemical reactions: Explore the energy changes and rates that govern reactions.
  • Organic chemistry: Study synthetic pathways used in pharmaceuticals and industrial processes.
  • Practical experiments: Reinforce your understanding of chemical theories with hands-on work.

Frequent laboratory sessions enhance your learning experience, allowing you to develop precise analytical and experimental skills.

Assessment

During A Level Chemistry, you will develop theoretical knowledge and practical expertise across a range of topics. The course is assessed through three written exams:

  • Paper 1: Focuses on periodic table elements, physical chemistry, and inorganic chemistry.
  • Paper 2: Covers synthesis and analytical techniques in organic chemistry.
  • Paper 3: Assesses your practical skills, along with content from the entire course.

Practical work is not graded separately but is integrated into the course, ensuring you develop essential laboratory skills.

Beyond the classroom

  • Competitions: Participate in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge and the Chemistry Olympiad.

“Chemistry helps us understand the world and create solutions for tomorrow’s challenges.”

You will enjoy Chemistry if you…

  • Are curious about how substances interact and transform
  • Enjoy hands-on practical experiments and data analysis
  • Want to explore the chemical foundations of medicine, engineering, or technology
  • Are interested in tackling global issues like climate change and sustainable energy.

“Chemistry is essential for careers in medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, pharmacology, and environmental science.”
