A Level Design Technology – Product Design, at Kimbolton

Preferred DTE entry requirements
At least a Grade 6 in a DTE-related subject. Desire to be creative and innovative; plenty of self-motivation.
Our A Level Design and Technology course is perfect for those intrigued by practical solutions to real-world challenges. You will explore the design process from ideation to production, delving into materials science, engineering principles, and aesthetics.
Using state-of-the-art Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM) technologies, students can create high-precision prototypes and products. Core skills include freehand drawing, creativity, and practical techniques, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the design landscape.
With opportunities to investigate sustainable practices and cutting-edge innovations, this course is as forward-thinking as it is inspiring.
Assessment
During A Level Design and Technology, you will study topics ranging from materials and manufacturing techniques to innovation and ethical design. The course emphasises theoretical understanding alongside hands-on practical applications.
Assessment includes:
Non-Exam Assessment (NEA): A substantial design and make project where you’ll develop a unique product, from conception to final prototype.
Practical work is embedded throughout, ensuring students gain confidence in developing and testing design ideas.
Paper 1: A written examination covering technical principles and design concepts.
