GCSE Drama immerses students in the world of theatre through a mix of practical and theoretical learning. You’ll devise original theatre pieces for live audiences, explore performance styles such as physical theatre and theatre in education, and interpret scripted plays. The course builds confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving skills as students work collaboratively to overcome creative challenges. Whether on stage or behind the scenes, this subject encourages innovation and critical reflection, making it ideal for aspiring performers, directors, or designers.

Assessment

Your assessment for GCSE Drama is divided into three components:

Devising theatre (40%)

  • Create and perform an original group piece for a live audience.
  • Includes a written portfolio documenting the creative process and an evaluation of the final performance.

Performing from a text (20%)

  • Perform a scripted scene, showcasing acting or design skills and interpretation.

Interpreting theatre (40%)

Written examination analysing set texts and reflecting on live theatre experiences.

Beyond the classroom

  • Participate in annual whole school productions, alternating between plays and musicals.
  • Take on leadership roles as a student director for the junior school show.
  • Join drama clubs such as Ingrams and Third Form Drama clubs.
  • Perform in the Fourth Form summer play.
  • Enrol in LAMDA classes for acting, public speaking, and musical theatre.
  • Attend theatre trips to productions such as Les Misérables and The Woman in Black.
  • Benefit from workshops by renowned theatre practitioners like Frantic Assembly.
