GCSE DT at Kimbolton

About the course

In Design and Technology, you’ll engage in hands-on projects that combine creativity with technical expertise. The course focuses on problem-solving through innovative design, material use, and advanced manufacturing techniques. You’ll learn to produce high-quality products that reflect both functionality and aesthetic appeal.

You can choose from two specialist options:

Systems & Control (Engineering Mechanisms): Focus on CADCAM to create an LED desktop lamp with mechanical features, utilising methods like concrete moulding, MIG welding, lathe turning, and 3D printing.

Resistant Materials (Product Design): Design and manufacture products like a Bluetooth speaker using materials such as plastics and timber. Techniques include laser cutting, vacuum moulding, and traditional craft skills.

Assessment

The assessment for Design and Technology is split evenly:

  • Coursework (50%): Complete an extended design and make project, developing a detailed portfolio and creating a product that reflects your chosen specialism. This task is completed under controlled conditions in class and as homework.
  • Exams (50%): Demonstrate your theoretical knowledge of design principles, materials, manufacturing processes, and systems in a written exam.

This balanced structure evaluates both your practical and theoretical skills in design and technology.

Beyond the classroom

  • Visit the JCB factory, touring their museum, design studios, and assembly lines.
  • Work with state-of-the-art tools, including laser cutters, CNC machinery, and 3D printers.
  • Participate in practical workshops and gain insights into industry practices.

“Design and Technology gives you the tools to turn ideas into reality. It’s a subject where creativity meets precision, opening the door to innovative solutions and exciting career opportunities.”

You will enjoy Design Technology if you…

  • Are creative
  • Enjoy independent projects
  • Feel happy developing your ideas
  • Like experimenting with materials
  • You have an interest in creating high-quality products with traditional materials and enjoy presenting ideas graphically.
  • You’re skilled in maths, precise in your work, and excited about exploring cutting-edge technology.

DTE offers opportunities to be creative but also to learn valuable practical skills. I really enjoyed using CADCAM and having a go at
MIG welding.”
