Celebrating Black History Month at Kimbolton

At Kimbolton School, Black History Month provided a valuable opportunity for pupils to celebrate Black history, recognise inspiring individuals and explore the importance of representation, diversity and inclusion.

At the beginning of October, Kimbolton Senior School welcomed local children’s author Michael Catchpool, who has recently launched a series of books featuring a Black central character. During an assembly, he spoke about the invisibility and under-representation of Black characters in children’s fiction, highlighting the importance of ensuring that all children can see themselves represented in the stories they read.

Michael also met with pupils from the school’s pupil-led Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) group to lead a workshop exploring barriers to inclusion and encouraging thoughtful discussion about how we can create a more inclusive community.

Meanwhile, throughout October, pupils at Kimbolton Prep School have been taking part in a range of age-appropriate activities and learning opportunities to mark Black History Month. They have been learning about inspiring Black individuals from the past and present by highlighting a person of the week such as Marcus Rashford and Nelson Mandela.

This allowed pupils to explore their achievements and contributions, and discover stories and experiences that may have been new to them. These activities encouraged pupils to ask questions, broaden their understanding and appreciate the many different experiences that shape our world.

At Kimbolton School, we believe that fostering curiosity, respect and open-mindedness is essential to helping every pupil feel valued and included. Black History Month offered a meaningful opportunity to celebrate diversity, learn from the past and recognise how our differences, experiences and backgrounds enrich the world we share.
