A huge congratulations to Upper Sixth pupil Dan M. who represented England at the 2026 FIPFA Powerchair Football World Cup in Buenos Aires, Argentina, helping the team secure second place in the tournament.
The competition ran from Saturday 17 October to Friday 23 October, with England enjoying an impressive run of nine consecutive victories before reaching the final. Dan played a key role throughout the tournament, contributing numerous goals and assists. He also scored a hat-trick against both the USA and Italy, helping England secure convincing 5–0 victories in both matches.
England faced France in the final, where the teams battled closely throughout the match. Despite a determined performance, England were narrowly defeated 2–1 in extra time, finishing the tournament as runners-up.
Powerchair football, also known as power football or wheelchair football, is a four-a-side sport played by people with physical impairments, including muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy and spinal muscular atrophy. The sport demands skill, teamwork and tactical awareness, with players using specially adapted powerchairs to control and strike the ball.
In recognition of his exceptional performances, Dan was named Young Player of the Tournament. This is a remarkable achievement for the 17-year-old, who was competing in his second World Cup.
In a interview with England, Dan said:
“Nothing compares to getting that call-up to represent your country. It is a feeling you just can’t explain.“
“Playing at such a high level at such a young age can be quite tough mentally so having people there to support me and who can help put things into context and not beat myself up is so important.”
