Kimbolton School’s Chamber Choir was honoured to take part in the Katharine of Aragon Commemoration Service at Peterborough Cathedral on Friday, 24 January 2025. This poignant event is a central feature of the Cathedral’s annual Katharine of Aragon Festival, paying tribute to one of Tudor England’s most resilient figures. A historical figure of great importance to Kimbolton School, Katharine spent her final years at Kimbolton Castle, now part of the school’s grounds.
Following her divorce from King Henry VIII, Katharine was confined to Kimbolton Castle where she lived a life of piety and simplicity until her death on 7 January 1536. Her enduring legacy is woven into the fabric of the school, with elements of the castle preserved to reflect her story.
Peterborough Cathedral, where Katharine is buried, continues to attract visitors who want to pay tribute to the remarkable Tudor queen. The service in January was led by The Very Revd Chris Dalliston, Dean of Peterborough, and featured readings, prayers, and the laying of wreaths on Katharine’s tomb by school pupils and visiting dignitaries. The Kimbolton School Chamber Choir performed Salve Regina (1583) by Tomas Luis de Victoria, a moving piece that resonated deeply against the historic backdrop of the packed Cathedral.
Kimbolton School Chaplain, Reverend Cathy, said:
“Participating in the Katharine of Aragon Commemoration Service was a poignant moment for Kimbolton School. Katharine’s life, marked by dignity and resilience, continues to inspire our students and community. The Chamber Choir’s performance today was a fitting tribute to her enduring legacy, and we are proud to honour her memory as part of this historic event.”
