Lunchtime insight workshop – Starting a business

Pupils at Kimbolton School were treated to an inspiring lunchtime talk on starting a business, led by our very own Head of Development, Russell Speirs. We were delighted to welcome pupils from Year 8 (2nd Form) through to 6th Form, all eager to learn practical advice and real-world insights into entrepreneurship.

The level of enthusiasm in the room was remarkable. Many pupils are already exploring business ideas, some are in the early stages of development, and others are impressively already running their own ventures. It was wonderful to see such entrepreneurial spirit and ambition across all age groups — a real testament to the creativity and drive of our pupils.

Russell shared invaluable guidance drawn from his own experience and from his professional network. Highlights included video insights from Vijay Solanki, who helped to launch Shazam, alongside two young entrepreneurs who have successfully launched a vintage clothing resale business called Proud Vintage. These real-life examples brought entrepreneurship to life, showing pupils that innovation can begin at any age.

Key messages from the talk encouraged pupils to dream big, identify a gap in the market, research whether there is genuine demand, and, crucially, to lead businesses with integrity. The emphasis on values as well as making their businesses profitable!

It was an uplifting and motivating session that reminded us all that entrepreneurship is about curiosity, courage, and creativity — all part of our learning DNA at Kimbolton.

What a fantastic way to spend a lunchtime. We are incredibly proud of the young entrepreneurs in our midst at Kimbolton School and look forward to seeing where their ideas take them next.
