Outdoor Pursuits pupil compete in Cambridge Youth League

Pupils in the school Sailing Team took part in the Cambridge Youth League hosted by Grafham Water Sailing Club. Conditions were challenging with bursts of sun, rain showers and gusty wind throughout the day, The sailors didn’t mind – they go out in all weathers! Well done to the sailors who took part, especially Lucas for coming 4th overall sailing his ILCA, and thanks to the Headmaster for coming to see the action.

The event was a combination of two events: Leg 2 of the Cambs Youth Sailing League and a qualifying event for the RYA National Junior Club Championships.

It was very tough conditions and extremely windy especially considering Henry and Will K. had never raced ILCAs before it was amazing to see everyone having a great time and doing very well in the tough conditions.

Starting with William K. (Upper Sixth) in an ILCA 6 coming 26th overall and achieving a 23rd in the first race. Incredible considering it was one of the first times he’s ever raced.

Next, we had Izzy R. (Year 8) in her RS Tera Sport coming 17th overall and 5th under 15. An amazing feat seeing as she only moved from a Topper into the Tera over the Easter holidays.

Then we had Samual (Year 10) with his crew Lewis coming in 15th overall in a Topaz Vibe. A great achievement for their first venture in the Vibe.

Closely in front was Henry D (Lower Sixth) in an ILCA 4 coming 12th overall. He deserves a massive well done seeing as this is the first time he’s raced an ILCA having moved away from Toppers last summer and he did incredibly well even in the very challenging conditions that many sailors would really struggle in especially if they have just moved into a much more difficult class.

And lastly, I came 4th overall in my ILCA 4 and was 3rd to qualify Grafham for the RYA Junior Clubs Championships.

Overall, I think it was a brilliant day for the entire team and especially because the large Grafham turn out backed by the school for this event lead to us winning the team prize for the day!
