Pupils from Kimbolton Prep School brought festive cheer to friends and families at their annual Winter Concert on Wednesday, 26 November. The concert was a celebration of musical talent, confidence and collaboration from children across the year groups.
The concert opened with the Lower Prep Choir performing a spirited version of Do-Re-Mi by Rodgers & Hammerstein, setting the tone for a warm and engaging afternoon. The musical journey continued with the Year 3 & 4 Recorder Ensemble and their clever take on I’ve Got the E-G-B-Gs, followed by charming contributions from the Double Reed Group (The Donkey, Skip to my Lou) and the Clarinet Ensemble’s gentle rendition of Away in a Manger.
Year 6 Recorder Ensemble offered two contrasting pieces, Silent Night and Dance, before the Ukulele Group performed a lively version of Riptide. The Brass Ensemble brought a wintery mood with Midwinter Blues (Holst/arr. Kingston), while the String Ensemble lifted spirits with a bright performance of Deck the Halls.
The Junior Choir impressed with Tightrope and Silent Night, both sung with clarity and emotion, before the Cygnet Sinfonietta delighted the audience with a pantomime retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk, featuring pupils Emmy (Narrator), Otto (Jack), Celia (Jack’s mum) and Rosie (Elf) in lead roles.
Following a short interval, the second half resumed with a fun performance of Santa Tell Me by the KPop Group. The Senior Choir followed with two well loved songs by Randy Newman: When She Loved Me and You’ve Got a Friend in Me, both performed with warmth and expression.
The Rock Band brought a burst of festive energy with All I Want for Christmas, followed by a catchy rendition of Frosty the Snowman by the Guitar Ensemble. The Chamber Choir showcased their vocal control with Somewhere Only We Know and a lively version of Every Time I Feel the Spirit.
Jazz Juniors delivered a toe-tapping take on Jazzy Jingle Bells, before Swan Sinfonia closed the ensemble performances with a seasonal pairing of March from The Nutcracker and The Twelve Days of Christmas. The final act came from the Pop Band, who brought the afternoon to a close with a vibrant rendition of Feliz Navidad.
Reflecting on the afternoon, Helena McKillop, Head of Music and Drama at Kimbolton Prep, said:
“It was great to see so many pupils from across the school performing with such enthusiasm, focus and enjoyment. Whether it was a first ever performance or a confident solo moment, each child played their part and contributed to a truly memorable celebration of music at Kimbolton.”
A huge thank you to all pupils, staff and families for their support and preparation and to Henry and Izzy for confidently leading the afternoon as Masters of Ceremonies.
