This is our new style monthly careers bulletin for parents. It will have information that is useful for you to help guide your child as they navigate through Kimbolton and beyond. “Small conversations today. Informed decisions for the future.“
Each careers update gives parents:
- Key dates to engage with your child’s careers education programme
- Career chat at home: A monthly focus, conversation starter and family activity designed to help parents support their child’s career journey.
- Future jobs “I never knew would exist in my lifetime”
- Careers board – Check out our new weekly bulletin for pupils in the Senior School .
Careers education programme events coming up:
Build your future workforce with Degree Apprenticeships – Monday 5th October 19:00-21:00h (Parents who own or are involved with companies who want to set up degree apprentices and 6th From pupils) – A fantastic evening to find out more about how degree apprenticeships are set up and how to successfully embed a degree apprentice into your company.
Subject taster sessions run by peers for the 3rd and 5th Form. All pupils are expected to attend:
Thursday 1st October 13:00-14:00h (3rd Form pupils only) – An opportunity for 3rd Form pupils considering their GCSE options to speak with current 5th Form students about their experiences of studying these subjects. Discussions will cover course content, workload, study expectations, and the grades typically required for progression to A Level, as well as how different subjects can connect to future career pathways.
Thursday 8th October 13:00-14:00h (5th Form pupils only) – 5th Form pupils will have the opportunity to meet current Sixth Form students and gain valuable insights into studying subjects at A Level. Topics will include course content, workload, academic expectations and where these subjects can lead after 18, including university, apprenticeships and other pathways. Members of the Sixth Form team will also be on hand to discuss life in the Sixth Form and answer any questions about making the transition.
Computer Science Trip to Surface Generation Ltd (4th Form pupils only) – This is an exciting day of idea sharing, projects and finding out about careers in the tech industry with an OK.
UCAS drop in sessions (U6th) 3rd, 10th October – for U6 pupils who would like 1-1 support with any aspect of their UCAS application, taking place on Saturday and after school every Monday & Thursday, and other times throughout the week. Appointment only: via this booking link:

Stop Asking “What Do You Want To Be? or What do you want to do?”
The Challenge
Many young people feel pressured when asked about their future career.
What Parents Need To Know
Today’s young people are likely to have several careers during their lifetime, and some may have more than one job at the same time. The focus isn’t on choosing one career for life, but on developing adaptable skills that will help them thrive in a changing world of work.
Family Activity
At dinner ask:
“What problems would you enjoy solving?” instead of “What job do you want?”
Questions to probe their thinking
- What jobs do you think might solve the problems?
- What would make work feel meaningful to you?
- Do you prefer working with people, ideas, technology, data, or practical tasks?
They don’t need to know the answers to these questions, it is about just exploring thinking together.
Resources
You could use AI and put in the problem you want to solve and get a list of jobs that might address that problem. Then use XELLO to look more in depth at those jobs.
