Open Door Week

Open Door Week saw teachers across the school quite deliberately opening their classroom doors to colleagues. Designed as a reflective, yet low-stakes opportunity for professional collaboration, teachers were invited to step into one another’s lessons in a spirit of curiosity, trust and shared learning.

The week was shaped by the understanding that meaningful improvement in teaching is rarely driven by high-stakes observation. Instead, creating opportunities to view everyday learning through a more authentic window can nurture a reflective culture grounded in real classroom experience. By fostering teacher efficacy through Open Door Week, we aimed to strengthen our shared sense of responsibility for — and ongoing commitment to — delivering high-quality education for every learner.

As such, teachers have been visiting multiple lessons throughout the week, often beyond their own departments. The intention of these short drop-ins was not to judge, but to notice – to see learning in action. The impact has been powerful. We have reflected upon and shared examples of thoughtful questioning, purposeful routines, inclusive strategies and developing academic rigour. Just as importantly, the week has fostered professional dialogue – conversations about what is working well, why it works, and how we continue to refine our craft.

At its heart, Open Door Week reflects our belief that fostering outstanding learning environments is built upon trusting relationships and collaboration. We are committed to ensuring that professional development is rooted in the reality of our classrooms at Kimbolton, and shaped by the expertise of our teachers. Some of the most valuable learning for classroom teachers happens not in distant conference halls, but only a few doors away from their own classrooms.

High-quality teaching and learning remain central to our strategic vision as a school. We aim to provide lessons that are intellectually ambitious, inclusive, carefully structured, and responsive to the individual needs of pupils. Initiatives such as Open Door Week – which we very much intend to repeat – strengthen that commitment to making teaching less isolated and ever more collaborative. The week has reminded us that great practice is already flourishing across our learning community. By opening doors – and the space for professional conversations – we continue to nurture a culture where curiosity and courage is encouraged, excellence is celebrated, and improvement is collective.
