How are school and subjects relevant for the world of work?
As pupils think about their future careers, it is important to understand that every subject studied at school helps develop valuable skills for life and work. While not every pupil will follow the same career path, the knowledge and skills gained in school provide the foundation for future opportunities.
The world of work is changing rapidly. Advances in technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are creating new jobs while changing existing ones. Careers in areas such as healthcare, engineering, cybersecurity, renewable energy, data science, digital technology, and advanced manufacturing are expected to grow in the coming years. These roles often require strong qualifications, technical knowledge, and the ability to keep learning throughout a career.
However, employers are not only looking for qualifications. They increasingly value the Learning DNA skills that AI cannot easily replace, including communication, teamwork, creativity, problem-solving, leadership, and emotional intelligence.
How School Subjects Build Career Skills
Here is a great website that gives lots of short videos of jobs relevant that are sorted by subject – ICOULD. And below is a very brief overview of where subjects and the skills you are developing could take you more generally.
Mathematics
- Develops problem-solving and analytical thinking.
- Supports careers in engineering, finance, technology, science, and business.
English
- Builds communication, writing, reading, and presentation skills.
- Essential in almost every profession.
Science
- Encourages investigation, critical thinking, and evidence-based decision-making.
- Supports careers in healthcare, research, environmental science, and engineering.
Computer Science
- Develops digital literacy and understanding of technology.
- Provides pathways into software development, cybersecurity, AI, and data analysis.
Humanities
- Strengthens research, evaluation, and decision-making skills.
- Valuable for careers in law, government, business, education, and public services.
Creative Subjects
- Encourage innovation, design thinking, and adaptability.
- Important in creative industries, marketing, media, product design, and entrepreneurship.
Careers of the Future
Research from organisations such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and the World Economic Forum suggests that future employers will increasingly seek people who can:
- Adapt to change.
- Learn new skills throughout their lives.
- Work effectively with technology and AI.
- Solve complex problems.
- Communicate and collaborate with others.
- Think creatively and ethically.
Pupils – ask yourself…
- Which subjects do I enjoy and why?
- What skills am I developing through my studies?
- How can I improve my communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities?
- What careers interest me, and what qualifications might I need? Are these careers in demand?Use Xello to help you!
- How can I develop my digital and AI literacy, both at school and at home?
Things for parents to consider
Celebrate effort, resilience, and improvement as well as exam results.
Encourage conversations about future careers and pathways.
Help children understand how school subjects connect to real-world jobs.
Support curiosity and a positive attitude towards learning.
Encourage reading, independent research, and responsible use of technology.
Discuss how AI is changing workplaces and why adaptability is important.
Kimbolton learners becoming leavers…
Many of today’s pupils will work in jobs that do not yet exist. The best preparation for this future is to develop strong subject knowledge, excellent learning habits, and the adaptability to embrace change. School is not only preparing you for exams—it is helping you build the skills, confidence, and resilience needed for a successful future career.
Experiences of the workplace over the summer.
Meaningful workplace experiences are a key part of helping pupils prepare for their future. The Gatsby Benchmarks (GBs) are a national framework used by schools across England to ensure pupils receive high-quality careers education. In simple terms, they set out what good careers guidance should look like. Gatsby Benchmark 6 (GB6) focuses on giving pupils opportunities to experience workplaces and learn directly from employers.
Seeing the workplace in action helps pupils understand what different jobs are really like. This includes what a typical working day involves, the skills employers are looking for, how careers can develop over time, and the range of pathways available in different sectors. These experiences help pupils make more informed decisions about their future options.
We actively encourage pupils to take part in work experience outside of school during the holidays, alongside the many employer talks and other employer engagement activities we have at school. Spending time in real workplaces and talking to people in jobs helps pupils explore what interests them, build confidence, and begin to understand which careers may suit them—and which may not.
By engaging with workplaces early, pupils are better prepared for key transition points such as GCSE choices, post-16 pathways, and post-18 decisions.
Workplace experiences can start small. They do not have to begin with a formal work placement. Examples include:
- Talking to family members, friends, or neighbours about their jobs.
- Attending careers fairs and employer talks.
- Taking part in workplace visits
- Meeting employers at school events.
- Volunteering in the community.
- Job shadowing a friend or family member for a day.
- Virtual work experience platforms
- Job simulations online
- Employer led live webinars
Each experience helps young people build a better understanding of different careers, workplaces, and industries. These experiences are particularly valuable at key decision-making points such as GCSE and A level choices.
Reflecting on any work experience is what makes it meaningful and impactful – here are some ideas of pupils and parents to help:
Big takeaway — What was the most important thing you learned from the experience?
Enjoyed tasks — Which tasks or moments did you genuinely enjoy? Why?
Disliked tasks — Which parts felt boring, stressful, or not for you?
Skills used — What skills did you use or discover you were good at?
Skills to develop — What skills do you need to build if you want to pursue this field?
Surprising insight — What surprised you most about the job or workplace? Why?
Work environment fit — Did the environment feel right for you?
Career interest shift — Did this experience make you more or less interested in this career?
Role models — Who inspired you during the placement, and why?
Next steps — What’s one action you can take now to explore this career further?
Post-18 choices
Whether considering university, apprenticeships, employment, or further training, workplace experiences can help students make more informed and confident decisions.
Meaningful workplace experiences also help young people develop important skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, organisation, resilience, and professionalism. These are skills that employers consistently value across all industries and will ask about at interviews – so this first hand information and evaluation is so important.
Perhaps most importantly, workplace experiences help young people learn about themselves. By seeing different jobs and working environments first-hand, they can begin to identify:
- What interests and motivates them.
- What types of work and environments they most enjoy.
- What career paths may not be right for them – an important finding!
Understanding what they do and do not enjoy at an early stage can be just as valuable as discovering a future career passion. It helps young people make informed choices, avoid unsuitable pathways, and feel more confident about their next steps.
“Every workplace experience—whether a conversation, visit, volunteering opportunity, or formal placement—helps young people build the knowledge, confidence, and self-awareness needed to make informed choices about their future.“
