Kimbolton School’s canoe team, The Purple Paddlers, embarked on the challenge of Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race over the Easter Weekend.
Known as one of the most challenging endurance events in the UK, the Devizes to Westminster (DW) race covers an extraordinary 125 miles from Wiltshire to the heart of London. Competitors face 77 portages, navigating both canal and river waters, testing not only physical but mental strength, teamwork and determination. This year, the team were fundraising for YoungMinds to help many people their age who are facing mental health challenges.

Following their recent success in winning the Waterside K2 Schools’ Team Trophy, the Purple Paddlers arrived at the start line well-prepared and full of confidence. Setting off at 8am on Good Friday, they made an impressive start. Aimee and Isaac quickly took the lead in the mixed category, while Tom and Theo surged ahead to claim first place overall.
The second day was expected to be quite challenging due to strong windy weather, but that didn’t stop them as Tom and Theo still lead the way.
A standout achievement came from Old Kimboltonians Matt and Harry, who arrived at Westminster after an extraordinary 23.5 hours of non-stop paddling—an incredible feat reflecting months of preparation and commitment.

On day three, the teams paddled from Marlow to Teddington, ensuring an early night in preparation for a 6am start to the finish line the following morning.
The Purple Paddlers team included:
- Tom & Theo
- Aimee & Isaac
- Hayden & Laura
- Emily & Hannah
- Aaron & Jake (OKs)
A historic moment for the school came when Sixth Form pupils Tom and Theo were crowned Kimbolton’s first-ever DW Junior Doubles winners—an outstanding achievement and a proud milestone for the team.
“We are incredibly proud of what they have achieved this year, showing so many of the school’s values: endeavour, courage, kindness.”
