Last night the Saloon welcomed a full audience as our Castle Curator, Andrew Bamford, delivered a fascinating lecture to members of the Local History Society.
Andrew’s talk explored the remarkable friendship between the 4th Earl of Manchester and Sir John Vanbrugh, the celebrated architect whose visionary work shaped some of Britain’s most striking buildings — including our very own Castle Aire. Through their shared ambition and collaboration, Vanbrugh’s bold architectural ideas were brought vividly to life.
The evening offered a glimpse into the personalities behind the architecture, revealing how friendship, patronage and creativity combined to produce buildings that still capture the imagination today. For many attendees, it was an opportunity to see the Castle in a new light — not simply as a historic building, but as part of a wider story of artistic vision and collaboration in the early 18th century.
The lecture also coincided with the nationwide Vanbrugh300 celebrations taking place throughout 2026. This programme marks 300 years since Sir John Vanbrugh’s death and celebrates his extraordinary contribution to British architecture, theatre and design. Across the country, historic houses, museums and heritage organisations are hosting exhibitions, events and talks exploring his enduring legacy.
Our Castle is proud to be part of this national commemoration, helping to bring Vanbrugh’s story — and the story of those who worked with him — to new audiences.
