Sixth Form pupils recently took part in an engaging Cooking Citizenship session led by Matthew Fullerton, General Manager of Catering, and Daniel Guest from the Kimbolton catering team. The session focused on an important part of preparing for life after school: the transition to living independently at university.
The interactive workshop explored the practical realities of pupil life, highlighting the shift from having meals and routines organised at home to managing one’s own “internal logistics” — shopping, cooking, budgeting, and planning meals. Pupils were introduced to simple strategies for preparing nutritious, affordable food while balancing a busy academic schedule.
Volunteers from the Sixth Form joined Dan at the front to demonstrate food preparation techniques, including stripping a chicken and assembling several quick, versatile dishes. The session emphasised the idea of cooking “building blocks” such as proteins, carbohydrates, and vegetables that can be combined in different ways to create multiple meals throughout the week.

Pupils also learned practical tips for budgeting and shopping efficiently, with examples showing how a modest food shop can produce 20 or more meals, as well as guidance on food safety, storage, and meal preparation.
The session concluded with a tasting opportunity, giving students the chance to sample the dishes created during the demonstration.
This hands-on event formed part of the Sixth Form Super Curriculum, equipping pupils with essential life skills and confidence as they prepare for the transition from school to university and independent living.
