Inside Kimbolton: in conversation with Mrs Jo Rowley-Burns

We love to celebrate the people who make Kimbolton such a vibrant and caring community. This month, we caught up with Mrs Jo Rowley-Burns, who recently joined the Prep School as Assistant Head – Pastoral.

Q: Jo, you’ve just started with us – how has your first term been so far?
It’s been wonderful. Everyone has been so welcoming, and I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the pupils. One of the best things has been seeing the sense of community here – there’s such warmth and spirit across the Prep, which makes it a great place to be.

Q: What does your new role involve?
I’m leading the development and delivery of our pastoral provision. In simple terms, that means making sure every child feels safe, supported and ready to thrive both in and out of the classroom. My role is about putting well-being at the centre of school life so that pupils can flourish in every sense – academically, socially, and personally.

Q: You’ve already made a big career in pastoral leadership – what have been some highlights before joining Kimbolton?
I spent over 20 years at Wellingborough School, where I was Acting Deputy Head. Over that time I’ve led initiatives like a Year 6 Buddy Scheme and worked with Anti-Bullying Ambassadors to achieve Diana Award recognition for inclusivity and well-being. I’ve also overseen safeguarding, behaviour, and day-to-day operations. For me, the highlight is always seeing children grow in confidence and happiness.

Q: What’s your personal philosophy when it comes to pastoral care?
Every child deserves the freedom to be who they truly want to be. That means creating an environment where pupils feel valued, respected, and encouraged. Pastoral care is about listening, empathising, and setting high standards – helping children build resilience and kindness while knowing they are fully supported.

Q: And when you’re not in school…?
I enjoy sport – I love football, rugby, and I’ve even run a very popular dodgeball club in the past. Anything that gets pupils moving, smiling and working as a team is right up my street. At home, I enjoy spending time with family and being active outdoors walking my dogs and visiting the gym.

Q: Finally, what are you most excited about in this new chapter?
I’m excited about helping pupils to flourish – in happiness, achievement, and character. Every child deserves to be who they want to be! Kimbolton has such a strong sense of family, and I’m thrilled to be part of it.
