Year 5 step inside the Circulatory System

Prep pupils bring science to life with a heart dissection experience

Our Year 5 pupils were captivated as they observed the dissection of a pig’s heart, turning classroom theory into an unforgettable hands-on learning experience.

Having spent recent lessons studying detailed scientific diagrams of the human heart, the children were excited to see a real specimen up close. This unique opportunity allowed them to identify key structures first hand, including the major blood vessels, chambers and valves. Comparing the real heart to the diagrams they had been analysing deepened their understanding and brought clarity to their learning.

To further enrich the experience, pupils used Merge AR Cubes to explore the heart in augmented reality, examining its structure in 3D. They also worked together around a large floor diagram of the heart, physically acting out the flow of blood through the chambers and vessels. By stepping into the roles of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood, the children were able to visualise and demonstrate the circulatory process in an engaging and memorable way.

This immersive approach helped to consolidate key scientific concepts and sparked thoughtful questions and lively discussion throughout the session.
