Storytelling and Sports: BBC Journalist Sarah Dawkins inspires pupils

On Tuesday, 11 November, we welcomed Old Kimboltonian (OK), Sarah Dawkins, Senior Journalist at BBC Sport, who visited small groups, from the Girls x Sport and Young Reporter groups, so we could gain insight from her experience in sports journalism.

She offered an engaging mix of personal stories and professional insight including the range of work she’s done reporting on Sam Kerr’s court case and covering the Women’s Euros last summer, which gave us a sense of the pace and responsibility of reporting on live sports.

Later, Sarah gave a talk to the Manchester Group where she spoke on both general and sports journalism, highlighting how storytelling, accuracy and sensitivity are essential across every topic.

Sarah also discussed her strong passion for women’s health in sport, an area she has written about extensively, including pieces on REDs, and she emphasised why greater coverage and understanding of these issues are crucial for athletes and audiences alike. Her dedication to raising awareness and improving understanding of these issues genuinely inspired us, and it highlighted how important it is to keep these conversations going for both athletes and audiences.
