Celebrating Neurodiversity across our school

Neurodiversity Celebration Week

This week, our school took time to recognise and celebrate the many different ways that human brains work as part of our neurodiversity celebration activities. This year, our theme is “Celebrating the strengths and talents of people who think and learn differently”.

Neurodiversity refers to the differences in how people think and learn, including those with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, DCD and dyscalculia. Rather than focusing on the challenges, this week encourages us to highlight the creativity, problem-solving abilities, empathy, innovation and unique perspectives that neurodivergent pupils bring to our school community.

In the Senior School, pupil members of KimUnity delivered a thoughtful and engaging assembly exploring how everyone experiences the world in different ways. They detailed a range of neurodivergent conditions and reminded pupils that different kinds of brains often bring different kinds of strengths. The assembly emphasised that when we talk about neurodiversity, it is important to focus not only on challenges, but also on the talents and abilities that come with thinking differently.

To help raise awareness across the school, posters were displayed featuring well-known celebrities with neurodiverse diagnoses, celebrating the achievements of individuals who think and learn in different ways. Additional posters highlighted the strengths associated with a range of neurodiverse conditions. Lunchtime activities were held in the Orangery, giving pupils the opportunity to learn more about neurodiversity and contribute to the ‘This is Me’ identity wall. In addition, the library curated a special display of books focused on neurodiversity and inclusive thinking.

In the Prep School, to hep raise awareness of neurodiversity, a range of creative lunchtime activities were held across the week. These helped pupils celebrate different ways of thinking while also promoting kindness and understanding. Activities included mindfulness colouring, rock decorating, badge designing, origami umbrellas – representing the idea that neurodiversity is an umbrella term for many different ways of thinking – and creating colourful neurodiverse brain collages.

Creating an inclusive environment is at the heart of what we do as a school. This week was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the idea that different ways of thinking are not deficits, but an important part of what makes our school community so interesting, creative and vibrant.

We are All Unique and All United.
