Preparing for open days for university and apprenticeships
You can visit universities at any stage of school, but from Fourth Form onwards it can be particularly valuable. Visiting a university gives you a real sense of the environment and can spark ideas about your future. It’s never too early to start exploring, but by the time you reach Year 12 it’s especially important to plan your open day visits carefully. Doing so ensures you don’t miss out on opportunities and that you make the most of each event.
For Year 12 pupils, research is our key focus and before signing up for an open day, it’s essential to research the universities thoroughly. By taking time to look into courses, entry requirements, and facilities online, you can avoid unnecessary journeys and quickly identify which universities are genuinely worth visiting. This preparation will save you both time and money and help you arrive at open days with a clearer sense of what areas you need to focus on to help you narrow down your options.
To support you, we’ve put together a handy guide with practical tips on what to expect and how to get the most out of an open day. There’s also a downloadable checklist to take with you, so you can keep track of the questions you want answered and note your first impressions.
What are University Open Days?
- Events hosted by universities to let prospective students explore the campus in person.
- You can meet staff and students, see facilities, attend subject talks/workshops, view accommodation, and get a feel for student life.
Do you have to attend them?
- No — they aren’t compulsory for applying to university.
- But they are very useful in helping you decide whether a university is right for you – you are going to be there for at least 3 years!
- You can attend alone or with family/friends; having someone else there might help you notice things you might miss.
Types of Open Days
- In-person open days, often with campus/accommodation tours, subject-talks etc
- Self-guided tours, using maps, apps or audio guides.
- Virtual open days, for when travelling is difficult. You can tour the campus, speak with staff or students online.
- Subject-specific taster days, focused on a particular department, including lectures, workshops etc.
Why attend
- To experience the “atmosphere” — seeing and feeling the place gives information that websites or prospectuses can’t.
- To compare universities in real terms: facilities, accommodation, support services etc.
- They are free and a relaxing environment to explore where you may end up living.
When & how to book
- Open days happen throughout the year.
- A great website where you will find most of the dates to make a calendar is www.opendays.com
- You’ll usually need to register/book a place in advance via the university’s website.
- If you can’t make an open day, many universities will allow you to arrange a separate campus visit.
How many to go to
- Research the universities first using Xello (which is a great summary of quick facts about universities) or UCAS or The complete University Guide. This can mean you won’t waste your time going to those you could have already ruled out.
- You can visit as many as you like, but we suggest going to weekend/holiday open days or a maximum of 2 school days (try not to miss the same days or too many Saturday matches and you will need written permission from the Head).
What to expect during a day
- Typical schedule: campus & accommodation tours; talks/presentations (finance, student support, admissions); subject department sessions; Q&A, meeting lecturers and students.
- Duration varies; many run from mid-morning through afternoon. Some evening sessions are offered.
How to prepare
- Check schedule / timetable in advance so you know which parts are most important to you. There is a checklist HERE that we have created for you to use.
- Make a list of questions you want answered.
- Bring essentials: a bag to put all the freebies in! A notebook, pen, maybe a camera/phone charger, comfortable shoes.
- Wear something comfortable but presentable.
Good questions to ask
- About the course: assessments, modules, placements/work experience, optional modules, number of students, industry links.
- Accommodation: types, cost, what’s included, safety, ability to live with friends, on/off campus, parking etc.
- Student experience: societies, facilities (library, sports, clubs), transport/link to town, support services, help for students with disabilities or mental health needs.
After the open day
Speak to Mrs Southern if you need more support in considering university or speak to your UCAS adviser if you want to talk about anything related to university applications
Reflect: what felt right / wrong; what you liked/disliked.
Make a pros & cons list to compare places.
Follow up unanswered questions: contact departments, admissions, or student support. They are very friendly and like to speak to students, so don’t be shy!
If still unsure, arrange a second visit if possible. You can also use UCAS chat function to talk to students about their experience of the university or course HERE
For any questions about the Careers Education Programme, please contact Mrs Southern.
Spotlight on Geography
Geography is a facilitating subject. Facilitating subjects are those that are most commonly required or preferred by universities for entry onto a wide range of degree courses. They are considered valuable because they develop essential skills such as critical thinking, analysis, research, and communication, which are highly transferable across different academic disciplines.
Geography is regarded as a facilitating subject because it bridges the sciences and the humanities, offering both analytical and evaluative approaches to understanding the world. It equips students with a broad skill set, including data interpretation, essay writing, and problem-solving, making it an excellent foundation for many higher education pathways and future career opportunities.
Where can Geography take you?

What subjects work well with Geography when considering future career paths?
Geography is such a versatile subject that it pairs well with both sciences and humanities, depending on the career pathways you may wish to explore. Here are some strong subject combinations:
For Sustainability and Climate Careers
- Science subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics): Essential for understanding ecosystems, energy, and environmental processes.
- Maths: Vital for data analysis, modelling climate change, and working in technical fields like renewable energy or carbon accounting.
- Computer Science: Increasingly important for GIS, data mapping, and environmental modelling.
For Policy, Planning, and Development Careers
- Economics: Links well with understanding sustainable growth, resource management, and development.
- Politics: Useful for tackling global challenges, climate policy, and international development.
For Communication and Global Careers
- English / Languages: Strong communication skills are essential for roles in sustainability advocacy, global development, or international work.
- History: Offers perspective on how past societies have adapted to environmental pressures and can inform today’s decision-making.
In short, geography acts as a bridge subject, connecting the sciences with the humanities. Pupils who study it gain flexibility – whether they want to pursue a career in science, business, technology, or policy, geography provides the foundation and the transferable skills to support their journey.

Focus on Technology
Technology is Powering the Green Jobs of the Future!
Technology is transforming the way we tackle environmental challenges and creating new, innovative green jobs. From using GIS mapping and remote sensing to monitor forests and wildlife, to deploying AI and big data to optimise energy use in cities, technology enables sustainability professionals to work faster, smarter, and more effectively. In renewable energy, advanced software models wind and solar output, helping engineers design better systems. In agriculture, sensors and drones improve crop efficiency while reducing water and chemical use. Even climate change analysis relies heavily on computer models and satellite data.
For pupils, understanding how technology and sustainability intersect is key to preparing for careers of the future.
Green Jobs Pupils Can Dream About
Here are some tech-driven sustainability careers that are growing fast:
- Renewable Energy Engineer – designing wind, solar, and hydro systems with advanced modelling tools.
- Climate Data Analyst – using AI and software to predict climate risks and solutions.
- Environmental Consultant – assessing and improving business sustainability using GIS and data analysis.
- Smart City Planner – combining technology and geography to design efficient, low-carbon urban spaces.
- Drone or Sensor Specialist – monitoring wildlife, forests, or crops for environmental projects.

The future of work: jobs and skills in 2030 (ref)
Here is a summary of how the UK government expects technology to shape future jobs, which will affect our children and their future jobs.
- Jobs will change substantially, not just in number but in nature—many roles will include more digital tools, more data, more automated or algorithm-driven elements.
- Growth in tech-enabled roles: demand for digital roles, AI-related skills, software development, data handling will increase sharply.
- Non-routine, higher processes valued: jobs involving creativity, critical thinking, interpersonal interaction will become more important—these are harder to automate and complement technology.
- Skill mismatches are a major concern: without action, many workers will lack required digital or soft skills; this can drag on productivity and economic growth.
- Education/training system needs to adapt: from school onwards, with more digital/AI content; plus adult learning, vocational routes, continuous professional development will be necessary.
- Policy action & investment are needed: government programmes are being designed to build capacity (skills, training infrastructure); also to encourage employers to invest in workforce skills.
Supporting our children for a tech‑driven future
The rapid pace of technological change means that the jobs your children will do in 10–15 years may not even exist yet. Many roles will require digital literacy, creativity, problem‑solving, and adaptability. For parents who haven’t grown up in a tech-first world, there are practical ways to support your children and help them thrive in this environment.
1. Encouraging skill stacking
At our school, we talk about skill stacking: thinking about the skills a child already has and layering new, complementary skills on top. For example:
- A student strong in communication could add coding or data analysis skills.
- Someone creative in arts could learn digital design or AI tools.
- A pupil with organisational strengths could develop project management or entrepreneurship skills.
Why it matters: Combining skills in unique ways makes children more flexible, adaptable, and competitive. They are not just preparing for one job—they are preparing to pivot between multiple opportunities as the job market evolves.
How parents can help:
- Encourage exploration beyond the school curriculum: coding clubs, online courses, or creative tech projects.
- Discuss how different skills can work together. For example, “You’re great at writing—how could adding video editing skills open new doors?”
- Celebrate curiosity and experimentation, not just traditional grades.
2. Promoting parallel planning
We teach parallel planning, which is about thinking of multiple potential routes into careers instead of focusing on just one. The idea is to:
- Explore several industries or roles at the same time.
- Identify overlapping skills that are valuable across multiple paths.
- Build flexible plans that allow children to adapt if a particular career path changes or disappears.
Why it matters: In a world where technology constantly reshapes jobs, children who have considered multiple pathways are less likely to be derailed by uncertainty. Parallel planning helps them see opportunities in change and prepare proactively.
How parents can help:
- Encourage discussions about different career ideas and the skills they require.
- Ask questions like: “If this job changes in five years, what else could you do with the skills you already have?”
- Support experiences that build transferable skills, such as volunteering, internships, or cross-disciplinary projects.
3. Keeping an open mind
- Emphasise adaptability: the most valuable trait in the future workforce is the ability to learn and apply new skills quickly.
- Promote digital confidence: children don’t need to be expert coders, but understanding how technology works and being comfortable using it will help them adapt.
- Encourage lifelong learning: highlight that learning doesn’t stop at school; the ability to acquire new skills throughout life is critical.
Even if technology wasn’t central to your own career, you can support your children by helping them recognise their existing strengths, think about how to stack new skills on top, and plan multiple routes into the future workforce. By combining skill stacking and parallel planning, children develop flexibility, resilience, and the mindset to thrive in jobs that may not even exist yet.
Volunteering, virtual work and career experiences
Getting involved in volunteering or work experience is one of the best ways to prepare for life beyond school. Not only does it give you practical, hands-on skills (like teamwork, organisation, and problem-solving), it also helps you build confidence, communication, and resilience—qualities that employers and universities are always looking for. In this workshop, pupils will learn why these experiences matter, how they can shape your future career options, and discover practical ways to find opportunities both in school and in the wider community.
“What actually is virtual work experience?”
In case you have the same question here is a brief explanation.
Virtual work experience lets pupils explore different careers online. They take part in interactive activities, hear from professionals, and complete tasks to build skills and confidence. It’s a safe and flexible way for pupils to learn about the world of work from home. These experiences are designed in collaboration with leading employers and include video content, interactive activities, and the chance to receive a certificate upon completion. They vary in length from 30 minutes to 10h on average. Sometimes they are live, but mostly On Demand.
These are a brilliant use of time for any pupils over the summer holidays! We recommend Springpod for a great range of opportunities with a wide range of companies. Older students may also be interested in The Forage, which is online work experience with large corporate companies and includes tasks and feedback within the experience.
